K1     Is the Landscape Maintenance Industry at a Crossroads? What Does the Future Hold?

Ron Hall, the Editor in Chief of Landscape Management, based in Cleveland, has been covering the Green Industry for more than 23 years. During that time he has interviewed hundreds of company owners and managers, conducted in-depth research on the industry and its future and spoken at many national and regional events.

In spite of significant challenges to the landscape industry – our roller coaster economy, concerns over pesticides, incredible competition – the future continues to look positive thanks to Baby Boomers, the next generation of “do-it-for-me” consumers and a realization of the value that landscaping adds to homes and homeowners’ lifestyles.

Dr. George Hudler
Monday, January 28, 2008 8:30 a.m.
K2       Great Moments in History and How the Fungi Got Us There

Dr. George Hudler was born and raised in northern Minnesota. He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Minnesota and was awarded a Ph.D. from Colorado State University in 1976. Immediately thereafter, he joined the faculty at Cornell University where he teaches two courses: Pathology of Trees & Shrubs and Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds. He also conducts outreach and research programs in the area of tree pathology, including publication of a bi-weekly pest management newsletter, Branching Out. He has received the Award of Merit and the Distinguished Arborist Award from the New York State Arborists Association as well as numerous local and national teaching awards. Dr. Hudler is also the author of a book of the same title as his popular course - Magical Mushrooms, Mischievous Molds. In 2004, George became the chair of Cornell's Department of Plant Pathology and the director of the Northeast Regional Center for the National Plant Diagnostic Network.

It’s obvious to people with the right vision that many of the most significant episodes in human history owe their happening to the influence of fungi. Among other things, learn how fungi contributed to the legend of Santa Claus, the visions of Joan of Arc, the success of the Notre Dame football team and Moses’ recovery of the Ten Commandments. Who knows? You may be next!

Todd A. Forrest

K3       Gardening in a Changing Climate

Todd Forrest, New York Botanical Garden Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections, has responsibility for all the programs and activities of the Horticulture and Living Collection division, including all the gardens, grounds, exhibitions and staff of 60 managers, curators and gardeners. Mr. Forrest received his Masters of Forest Science degree from Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and has made a great impact as an expert and advocate for historic trees, forests and urban landscapes and for the interpretation of gardens and collections to the public. He previously worked at the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University and then joined the New York Botanical Garden first as an intern, then as a research assistant after graduate school. He became a vital part of NYBG's staff in 1999. In addition to overseeing the curation and development of the gardens, displays, living collections and the Nolen Greenhouses, he advises on long-term strategy and development. This includes supervising curators for the 50-acre mixed hardwood forest, hardy trees, shrubs and all other living plant collections. Mr. Forrest also instructs on woody ornamental plants and has authored articles and interpretive materials for garden visitors.

Gardeners are attuned to the climate – the gardens we create are planned around rainfall, minimum temperatures and frost dates. So how should gardeners respond to climate change? Mr. Forrest discusses the impacts of climate change on gardens, how gardeners are adapting to this change and how to mitigate future change by adjusting gardening techniques.

Felder Rushing

K4     Exotic Landscape Plants: Using the Good, Adapting the Bad

Felder is a 10th-generation Southern gardener, author of 15 garden books (including Passalong Plants, Tough Plants for Southern Gardens) syndicated columnist member of the American Horticulture Society, the national director of the Garden Writers Association, and a recently retired consumer horticulturist with his state's Extension Service. As a contributing editor for numerous horticulture and garden design magazines, Felder has had hundreds of articles and photographs in all major gardening publications including Landscape Architecture, Better Homes and Gardens, National Geographic, Country Living, Organic Gardening, and others. His cottage garden has been featured on HGTV and the Discovery Channel.

Can't we all just GET ALONG? Despite shrill warnings from native plant enthusiasts and boycotts by eco-minded bullies, we can find ways to use or sell exotic species - even the ones that tend to be a little troublesome in the wild. New "middle of the road" programs are finding ways to promote these plants and their new non-aggressive cultivars – and great alternative species and all sorts of tie in products - without making you feel like an environmental traitor.
