Arboriculture -Basic

TUESDAY, JANUARY 29, 2008

8:00 - 9:00 am

AB1     Tree Biology through the Seasons
Joe Murray, Consulting Arborist

Look at a tree through the eyes of a biologist. This presentation follows carbon and nitrogen into and out of the tree through the seasons. Gain perspective on the connections between a tree’s anatomy and physiology.

9:15 - 10:15 am

AB2     An Introduction to the New i-Tree Benefit Models and Tools
Jennifer Gulick, Davey Resource Group

i-Tree is a suite of free software tools recently released by the U. S. Forest Service that can be used to assess and manage community forests. With these tools, cities, counties, arborists, and urban forest managers can accurately quantify the benefits of trees and urban forests, understand and balance the costs of management, and become better prepared for weather emergencies.

AB3     Is the Customer Always Right?
Jason Heizer, Hampton Roads Tree Care Assoc., Bartlett Tree Experts
Kristina Villaire, Hampton Roads Tree Care Assoc., City of Chesapeake

Working with trees is really about working with people. Join us for a motivating look into the tools we need in order to exceed our customers’ expectations while doing what is ethically responsible.

1:00 - 2:00 pm

T1        Understanding Trees & Lightning – Sparking Great Protection
Kim Coder, Warnell School, University of Georgia

One protective service installed on historic and culturally significant trees is lightning protection. Saving valuable specimen trees from catastrophic lightning damage can be a wise investment. Understanding the forces of lightning, its impact on trees and our means for mitigating damage in a safe and cost-effective manner is critical. Join us for a basic review of critical issues involved with lightning protection and lightning conduction systems. This is not an installation specification guide.

2:15 - 3:15 pm

AB4     Growing Trees in the Asphalt Jungle
Susan French, Virginia Cooperative Extension

The urban environment presents many challenges to tree health and vigor. Learn to identify and minimize the factors that cause stress in trees.

3:30 - 4:30 pm

AB5     Do You Know the Trees You Should Know?
Tracy Brieger, Tidewater Community College

ISA certified arborists in the Mid-Atlantic are required to know 40 trees. Do you know them all in all four seasons? What is characteristic about the leaf scar on the Sassafras? How many lenticels are on the internodes of Cercis canadensis? Who is opposite and who is alternate? Anybody whorled yet? Make sense of it all in this interactive session.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2008

8:00 - 9:00 am

AB6     Branch and Stem Unions: the Cornerstones of Arboriculture
Ed Gilman, Dept. Environmental Horticulture, University of Florida

New developments in tree biology and recent advancements in the science of tree structure provide a sound basis for delivering good arboriculture. Come learn how to defend good arboricultural practices by understanding how trees work and how they are put together. Experience some of the latest research and how to incorporate it into your daily operations. Some of the advancements provide new business opportunities and better ways to care for trees.

9:15 - 10:15 am

AB7     Pruning to Reduce Tree Maintenance Costs
Ed Gilman, Dept. Environmental Horticulture, University of Florida

Pruning can have a dramatic impact on how trees respond to gravity, wind and ice storms. Our data generated from a wind machine producing up to 120 mph winds shows that structural pruning designed to reduce growth rate and weight on codominant limbs is the most effective method of minimizing damage from storms. Attendees go home with a new understanding of how and why we prune trees, and how to apply pruning to most real life situations.

10:45 - 11:45 am

AB8     Trees Have Hormones and … They Know How to Use Them
Joe Murray, Consulting Arborist

From germination to death and pretty much everything in between, tree hormones are calling the shots. This presentation explores how common arboricultural practices and environmental signals influence tree hormones and physiological activities.

11:45 am - 1:00 pm     Lunch (on your own)

12:00 - 12:45 pm (optional)

Tours of Founders Inn grounds by James River Grounds Management.

1:00 - 2:00 pm

AB9     Tree Appraisal Techniques
Debbie Dillon, Virginia Cooperative Extension

Learn the basic types of tree appraisal, why appraisals may be needed, steps in conducting an appraisal and other factors that should be taken into account. Debbie teaches you how to perform tree appraisals by building your skills from the bare ground up!
