AC2 Bleeding Cankers on Beech and
Other Landscape Trees
George Hudler, Dept. Plant Pathology, Cornell University
With the
discovery of Phytophthora ramorum, cause of Sudden Oak Death in
California several years ago, plant health care professionals throughout
the world have had their eyes sharpened to look for bleeding cankers on
any species of deciduous tree. Some of these are, indeed, caused by a
species of Phytophthora; others are caused by other species of fungi,
and still others originate from insect wounds. P. ramorum out of its
current range is rare, but with the threat looming, all bleeding cankers
cause alarm. This presentation helps put things into perspective.

AC3 Better Trees through Science
Margaret Pooler, USDA / ARS U.S. National Arboretum
The U.S.
National Arboretum was established in 1927 to educate the public,
conserve and display plants and to conduct horticultural research. The
tree breeding and improvement programs have resulted in the release of
shade trees such as sycamores, maples and elms, as well as flowering
trees such as cherries, magnolias and crapemyrtles. Join us for a
discussion of past and current tree improvement efforts as well as a
showcase of great trees that have come from the National Arboretum and
what you can expect in the future.
